All faculty, staff, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are required to sign a Stanford Patent and Copyright Agreement (the SU-18 form) as a condition of employment, enrollment or appointment into a training program at Stanford University. In addition, individuals who are not appointed at Stanford as faculty, staff, graduate students or postdocs, and who participate or intend to participate in research projects at Stanford must also sign a Stanford Patent and Copyright Agreement.
A variation of the standard Stanford agreement has been created for those who are not being paid by Stanford and who have prior obligations to another employer regarding the disclosure and assignment of intellectual property. This agreement is not applicable to individuals who are appointed as a faculty or staff member, graduate student or postdoc at Stanford University.
Faculty members are responsible for knowing who is working in research facilities under their control, and for assuring that ALL of those individuals have signed an appropriate intellectual property agreement with Stanford University. Failure to have such agreements in place compromises our ability to comply with the terms and conditions of sponsored projects and to meet federal and sponsor requirements related to the handling of inventions. In addition, the use of Stanford facilities for commercial or other non-Stanford proprietary purposes could jeopardize the university's nonprofit status and violate the provisions of our Openness in Research policy.
If you are retired, self-employed or are here solely for teaching or clinical (i.e., non-research) work please do not complete this form. If you have any questions about the SU-18A form, contact us directly at otl@stanford.edu.
